Chip Index Plunges 6.72% With All 30 Members Lower as AI Funding Fears Hit Lam and Nvidia

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 6.72% to 10,731.98 on Thursday, its lowest close since July 29, with all 30 members lower and the Nasdaq Composite down 2.6%, per TradingKey and Arabian Post. Lam Research fell 11.76% to $230.15 after a guide held back by supply constraints, Meta fell 6.98% after lifting 2026 capital spending to $135 billion to $145 billion, and Nvidia closed at $212.21, down 4.40%.

"The demand for capital is much greater than the supply of the capital." — Jensen Huang, CEO, Nvidia, via TradingKey

Huang’s point was that funding, not demand, is the bottleneck, and ChipSentinel reads the rout as a repricing of AI financing risk rather than weaker orders: Lam guided December-quarter revenue to $8.6 billion, above its record $8.22 billion quarter, and expects 2027 WFE spending above $200 billion, per Arabian Post. Friday premarket, Nvidia was down 0.23%, Lam up 0.37% and SK hynix up 4.26%, per StockAnalysis, so selling looks paused ahead of the FOMC meeting on October 27–28, per BigGo.

Companies & Financials

MaxLinear Revenue Jumps 72% and Q4 Guide Beats, Yet Shares Fall 13.9%

  • MaxLinear reported third-quarter revenue of $218.1 million, up 72% year over year and 29% from the prior quarter, against consensus of $214.9 million, with non-GAAP EPS of $0.62 versus $0.56, per Business Wire (October 22); fourth-quarter revenue guidance is $240 million to $260 million against consensus of $226.7 million, and the 2026 optical data-center outlook was raised to $250 million to $270 million, per StockAnalysis. Why it matters: infrastructure revenue grew 210% to about $125 million, but operating cash flow was negative $13.6 million on wafer prepayments, and the shares closed at $65.28, down 13.87%, with Investing.com naming no single cause, so on ChipSentinel’s reading the market sold a beat-and-raise alongside the sector.
  • Texas Instruments closed Thursday at $279.50, down 1.81%, and traded at $278.73, down 0.28%, in premarket, per StockAnalysis, the smallest decline among the large names in Arabian Post’s tally despite its October 21 report. Why it matters: against a 6.72% fall in the SOX by ChipSentinel’s arithmetic the analog bellwether lost about a quarter as much, which fits the view that analog demand is less exposed to AI financing than equipment and optical names.

Kospi Drops 3.52% as SK hynix Falls 8.07% in New York, Then Rebounds 4.26% Premarket

  • South Korea’s KOSPI closed Thursday down 3.52% at 5,533.77, with Samsung Electronics down 4.03% and SK hynix down 5.49%, per Yonhap via Korea JoongAng Daily, and opened Friday at 5,403.17, per KED Global. Why it matters: a Daishin Securities analyst said the end of SK hynix’s share buyback removed a source of market support, and foreign investors were net buyers on the day, so on ChipSentinel’s reading the Seoul decline was led by domestic institutions rather than foreign selling.
  • SK hynix’s U.S. listing closed Thursday at $131.69, down 8.07%, and Micron closed at $856.49, down 6.26%, per StockAnalysis and per StockAnalysis; premarket, SK hynix traded at $137.30, up 4.26%, and Micron at $863.75, up 0.85%. Why it matters: ChipSentinel’s arithmetic puts SK hynix about 4% above Thursday’s close, recovering roughly half of its loss, while Micron has regained about 1%, so the rebound is uneven across memory names.
Supply Chain, Equipment & Fabs

Lam Sees 2027 Equipment Spending Above $200 Billion as Meta Obligations Hit $825 Billion

  • Lam Research expects global WFE spending above $200 billion in 2027, with 10 major fabs becoming operational that year and contributions arriving gradually, per Arabian Post (October 22); CFO Doug Bettinger said some December-quarter shipments may shift to the March quarter, and about 35% of September-quarter revenue came from China, with a substantial decline expected next quarter. Why it matters: the company did not quantify the shipment shift, and BigGo reported Applied Materials down 6.57% and ASML down 4.83%, so on ChipSentinel’s reading the multi-year outlook is intact while the market discounts quarterly timing.
  • Meta’s lease and contractual obligations were about $825 billion, up roughly $125 billion in one quarter, with 2026 capital spending guided to $135 billion to $145 billion and third-quarter free cash flow negative $2.12 billion, per BigGo and Arabian Post (October 22). Why it matters: ChipSentinel reads these commitments as the demand side of the funding question Jensen Huang raised, since Meta’s spending feeds chip orders and its cash flow turned negative.
Policy & Geopolitics

Commerce Signs $85 Million CHIPS Letter With Commonwealth Fusion as Tariff News Stays Quiet

  • Commonwealth Fusion Systems signed a letter of intent with the Commerce Department for an $85 million CHIPS research award for semiconductors and power electronics used in fusion plants, per IndexBox (October 22); Digitimes’ headline puts the batch of power-chip and fusion deals at up to $389 million. Why it matters: a letter of intent is not a final award, and the report names no other recipients, so on ChipSentinel’s reading the money targets power electronics rather than leading-edge capacity.
  • The U.S. imposed a 25% Section 232 tariff on certain advanced computing chips including Nvidia’s H200 and AMD’s MI325X, exempting chips imported to build out the U.S. supply chain, per Intelligent CIO (background reading, published January 15). Why it matters: ChipSentinel found no new tariff action this week, and AMD closed Thursday at $507.93, down 8.10%, per StockAnalysis, so the decline reflects the sector sell-off rather than a trade measure.

Evercore Cuts Lam Research Target to $315 While Susquehanna Trims MaxLinear to $70

  • Evercore ISI cut its price target on Lam Research to $315 from $355 and kept an Outperform rating, per Arabian Post (October 22); Lam closed Thursday at $230.15, so the target sits about 37% above the close by ChipSentinel’s arithmetic.
  • Susquehanna cut its price target on MaxLinear to $70 from $80 and kept a Neutral rating, per TheFly via TipRanks (October 22); the shares closed at $65.28, so the target sits about 7% above the close by ChipSentinel’s arithmetic.
