BNP Paribas Downgrades GlobalFoundries to Neutral, Cutting Its Target to $51 From $80

BNP Paribas Exane analyst Karl Ackerman downgraded GlobalFoundries to Neutral from Outperform on Monday and lowered his price target to $51 from $80, per Investing.com. Ackerman cited about 70% of revenue and 90% of design wins tied to single-sourced specialty processes, and said diversification into optical, satcom and automotive power should come more gradually than current projections; GuruFocus reported the call also rests on growth prospects being largely priced in. GlobalFoundries closed at $48.56, down $1.61 or 3.21%, at a 37.93 price-to-earnings multiple on $6.94 billion of trailing revenue, up 1.4%, per StockAnalysis, where 22 analysts carry an average target of $76.00.

"The plan will be executed in phases, enabling UMC to remain focused on capital discipline while flexibly deploying capacity to fulfil customer demand." — Jason Wang, CEO, UMC, via Yahoo Finance (Reuters)

Wang was describing a fellow specialty foundry’s capacity plan, and it frames the contrast in BNP’s call: UMC is spending a $2 billion 2026 budget on new capacity, while Ackerman questions how fast GlobalFoundries can widen its customer and end-market base. On ChipSentinel’s reading, the $51 target sits about 5% above Monday’s close, so the downgrade is a statement about multiple rather than a forecast of a large decline; a stock at 37.93 times earnings needs the optical, satcom and automotive ramps to arrive on schedule, and slower diversification would leave earnings leaning on the current base. Investing.com also reported that customers can qualify once and build elsewhere, and that U.S. capacity commands a premium, which is the structural support for the company’s footprint. The $51 target is below the average $76.00, so the note widens the dispersion of views rather than shifting the consensus.

Companies & Financials

Altman Backs Cerebras After a 20% Slide as Marvell Enters Investor Day on Event Risk

  • Cerebras closed Monday at $181.55, up 9.08%, after OpenAI’s Sam Altman posted that the company is "a close partner" with a "deep engagement," per Forbes, which said the shares had fallen about 20% the prior week to $166.43 after SemiAnalysis reported OpenAI’s GPT-6.1 Sol runs on Nvidia GPUs rather than Cerebras hardware. Cerebras listed in May at $185 and is still below that level, and OpenAI agreed in April to spend over $20 billion on its chips over three years. Why it matters: Altman’s post did not confirm or deny Nvidia’s role in the model, so the rebound reverses part of the slide without resolving how much of the $20 billion commitment depends on that workload.
  • Marvell Technology closed Monday at $271.25, down 0.38%, ahead of today’s investor day, per StockAnalysis; Investing.com noted the shares fell 11.62% after the August 27 earnings report despite a $0.94 EPS print against $0.93 expected. RBC expects management could raise its fiscal 2029 AI revenue outlook by at least $2 billion, and the custom-silicon business generates roughly $1.5 billion annually. Why it matters: the setup demands measurable long-term economics rather than revenue growth alone, so a presentation that is merely positive carries downside risk after the August reaction.
Memory Desk

Brokers Model Q3 DRAM Up 15% to 22% as SK Hynix Slips 2.38%

  • Samsung Securities projects a 22% quarter-on-quarter DRAM price increase and Hana Securities 15%, with Hana also seeing NAND up 18%, per Seoul Economic Daily (October 4). The same report expects HBM4 to reach about 15% of total DRAM revenue by next year, and NH Investment & Securities’ Ryu Young-ho said the "strategic value and binding power of long-term supply contracts" should strengthen as inference and AI agents spread. Why it matters: the two brokers differ by seven points on DRAM, so contract pricing in the coming results will show which estimate is closer, and long-term contracts would reduce the earnings volatility the memory cycle has historically carried.
  • SK hynix fell 2.38% on Tuesday, with Micron down 0.59% and SanDisk down 0.63%, as investors turned cautious ahead of Asian memory makers’ earnings, per TipRanks (October 6), which also cited reports of U.S. data-center delays, pressure on SK hynix and Samsung to share gains with workers through bonuses, and a stronger won. SK hynix reports October 27, and Susquehanna expects the supply-demand balance to stay tight through 2028. Why it matters: the decline is modest and driven by positioning and currency rather than pricing, while the data-center delay reports are the one item that would affect memory demand if confirmed.
Supply Chain, Equipment & Fabs

UMC Prices $1.8 Billion of Converts and Its ADR Falls 8.95% as Da Yi Cheng Sees Orders to 2028

  • UMC priced $1.8 billion of zero-coupon convertible bonds Monday, with proceeds funding Singapore Phase 4 silicon-photonics and packaging capacity from late 2027 to early 2028 and Tainan Phases 7 and 8 contributing from the second half of 2028 into 2029, per UAnalyze (October 5). Conversion premiums are 17.5% and 32.5% to the NT$152.50 Taiwan close and dilution is about 2.34% if every bond converts, per Stocktwits; the ADR closed at $23.92, down 8.95%, which TradingKey attributed to convertible-arbitrage short selling. Why it matters: the capacity does not generate revenue for roughly 12 to 24 months, so the 2026 capex step-up to $2 billion precedes any earnings contribution, and the selling reflects hedging mechanics rather than a change in the fab plan.
  • Da Yi Cheng Technology’s orders have passed NT$10 billion with visibility through 2028 on TSMC’s expansion, per Digitimes (October 6). Why it matters: on ChipSentinel’s reading, supplier order books extending to 2028 indicate TSMC’s fab-build schedule runs that far out, which supports equipment and facility-systems demand independent of AI accelerator pricing.
Policy & Geopolitics

Fed Minutes Due Wednesday With Year-End Hike Odds at 84% as a Strong Won Trims Samsung Views

  • Minutes of the latest Fed meeting arrive Wednesday, with the market pricing a 20% chance of an October hike and an 84% chance of a hike by year-end, per Schwab (October 5 update). Why it matters: the shift is in timing rather than direction, so long-duration chip multiples still face rate pressure into the December window even after the October odds fell.
  • Forecasts for Samsung Electronics’ third-quarter operating profit have been lowered on the won’s recent strength, per Seoul Economic Daily (October 6). NH Investment & Securities’ Na Jung-hwan said the "structural growth trend at semiconductor companies continues" despite short-term earnings concerns. Why it matters: a stronger won reduces the translated value of dollar-denominated memory sales, so Thursday’s results can miss on currency even if chip prices are in line.

SemiAnalysis Weighs Subscription Compute Load as Chip Stock Investor Revisits Intel’s CPU Case

  • SemiAnalysis found Anthropic subscriptions offer about 5x the API-equivalent value of OpenAI’s at the mid tier, and that subscriptions, roughly 10% of Anthropic’s revenue, can take over 40% of inference compute and lower blended revenue per megawatt by about $36 million, per SemiAnalysis (published October 5; authors Andrew Megalaa, Max Kan and Dylan Patel).
  • Chip Stock Investor argues AI agents need substantial CPU-side orchestration, with Intel’s data center segment up 59% year over year in the second quarter to $6.3 billion and the stock’s roughly 200% YTD gain already pricing in much of the thesis, per Chip Stock Investor (background reading, published September 28).
